Astronaut Discloses Depression Following Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the mission, including elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the edge of outer space.

The group of women also included accomplished professionals from different industries.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
